Dynamics of Carbon Accumulation in Tropical Dry Forests under Climate Change Extremes

چکیده

We analyze here how much carbon is being accumulated annually by secondary tropical dry forests (TDFs) and structure, composition, time since abandonment, climate can influence the dynamics of forest accumulation. The study was carried out in Santa Rosa National Park Guanacaste province, Costa Rica Mata Seca State Minas Gerais, Brazil. Total storage accumulation were obtained for both sites from sum aboveground belowground gain plus annual litterfall. Carbon these TDFs varied 2.6 Mg C ha−1 y−1 to 6.3 y−1, depending on age stands. Time abandonment number stems per plot best predictors storage, gains, losses. Mortality rates losses also associated with seasonal variability. found significant correlations between tree mortality, mean temperature, precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, Oceanic Niño Index. are driven structure; however, rising temperature El Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events have a impact mortality Depending their location land-use history, some more impacted climatic extremes than others, differences stages expected.

Precipitation Extremes Under Climate Change

The response of precipitation extremes to climate change is considered using results from theory, modeling, and observations, with a focus on the physical factors that control the response. Observations and simulations with climate models show that precipitation extremes intensify in response to a warming climate. However, the sensitivity of precipitation extremes to warming remains uncertain w...

Sensitivity of tropical precipitation extremes to climate change

Precipitation extremes increase in intensity over many regions of the globe in simulations of a warming climate1–3. The rate of increase of precipitation extremes in the extratropics is consistent across global climate models, but the rate of increase in the tropics varies widely, depending on the model used3. The behaviour of tropical precipitation can, however, be constrained by observations ...

Lianas reduce carbon accumulation and storage in tropical forests.

Tropical forests store vast quantities of carbon, account for one-third of the carbon fixed by photosynthesis, and are a major sink in the global carbon cycle. Recent evidence suggests that competition between lianas (woody vines) and trees may reduce forest-wide carbon uptake; however, estimates of the impact of lianas on carbon dynamics of tropical forests are crucially lacking. Here we used ...

Temperature influences carbon accumulation in moist tropical forests.

Evergreen broad-leaved tropical forests can have high rates of productivity and large accumulations of carbon in plant biomass and soils. They can therefore play an important role in the global carbon cycle, influencing atmospheric CO2 concentrations if climate warms. We applied meta-analyses to published data to evaluate the apparent effects of temperature on carbon fluxes and storages in matu...

Terrestrial Carbon Cycle Dynamics under Recent and Future Climate Change

The behavior of the terrestrial carbon cycle under historical and future climate change is examined using the University of Victoria Earth System Climate Model, now coupled to a dynamic terrestrial vegetation and global carbon cycle model. When forced by historical emissions of CO2 from fossil fuels and land-use change, the coupled climate–carbon cycle model accurately reproduces historical atm...
